FUEL SURCHARGE – Due to the increase in costs for fuel refining, the transportation industry is realizing some hefty increases in the cost of diesel fuel. Practicality and efficiency are key to every successful business, and by instituting fluctuating fuel surcharges to offset the fuel cost increase, carriers have eliminated the need to renegotiate your contract each time the fuel price increases or decreases.
Forward thinking shippers understand that carriers must pass this increase onto the customer. Although the Mainstream Transportation Inc. sets the fuel surcharge as per the FCA (Freight Carriers Association) recommendation, we continually monitor fuel prices set by other regulating bodies.
The Government of Alberta has recently imposed a CARBON TAX on Green House Gas (GHG) emissions from fossil fuel combustion. This tax came into effect on January 1, 2017 at a level of $0.0535 per liter of Diesel Fuel. It will escalate on January 1, 2018 to $0.0803 per liter, with no plans at this time for further escalation imposed by the Alberta Provincial Government.
As a result of this new tax, Mainstream Transportation Inc. will apply a revenue neutral Carbon Tax Assessment for Truckload shipments shipped from or to the Province of Alberta. This charge will appear on your invoice as its own line item called “Carbon Tax” to keep this new government initiative separate from Mainstream Transportation Inc., charges and took effect on February 1, 2017. The charges for the Alberta Carbon Tax will be 2% per load of the freight charge.
